It was noticed that the rats that received a normal diet displayed no changes while the other two groups displayed a reduction of insulin levels. Propolis also brought down the systolic blood pressure in the subjects that were given a diet of propolis. This was evidence enough for the researchers to say that dietary propolis could improve insulin sensitivity and blood pressure during the early stages of the process in developing insulin resistance.
The study was conducted on rats, and it would therefore be incorrect to state that humans will also display like results. However, there are indications that humans too could react in a similar manner. The actual results will only be known after a research has been carried out with humans as the test subjects. However, it is worth using propolis as part of a blood sugar control program that is comprehensive. It is also suggested that ingredients like Omega-3 fatty acids, chromium and alpha lipoic acid also be included in the diet regularly to understand whether the study conducted can have a positive impact on humans as well.
It is essential to note that the studies conducted are not conclusive for humans. Therefore, people who are already sensitive to insulin should not attempt this therapy, unless they have been suggested the same by their physician. Any mistake in this regard could lead to problems, which will require medical attention. It must be understood that the studies are still in the initial stages and will take some time before it can safely be mentioned that propolis can indeed bring about improvements to insulin sensitivity.
