Candidiasis or candida for short is a fungal infection-better known as yeast. Yeast can show up in the mouth known as oral thrush and characteristic of a coated tongue. Thrush is commonly found in people with weakened immune systems, the elderly, babies, or diabetics. Candida affect the genitals, blood, oral cavity, and skin and are found in the body in small amounts. Yeast can also infect the esophagus, pharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and the bladder. Having a disease, such as, diabetes can increase yeast. Like women with diabetes men with diabetes also has an increased risk
Many women confuse having a bacterial infection with a yeast infection. Symptoms of infection in women include extreme itching, thick clumpy discharge resembling cottage cheese, sore red area, and pain with intercourse. An odor is another sign but not a fishy odor because that is characteristic of bacterial infections. Candida smells just like it is-yeast. It smells like baking bread and for me the smell of yeast is stronger if I have consumed more bread. I will have a yeasty smell coming from my pores.
Yeast infections are a common cause for vaginitis. When the vaginal flora changes that is when a vaginal infection sets in. The using of douche and detergents from washing your clothes can off set the natural flora of a woman's vagina. Also using douche and excessive perfume scented soaps can create a problem for women with yeast and bacterial infections. It is best to use natural pure products when cleaning the vaginal area.
Men can get yeast infections too. Men who are not circumcised are more likely to have infections. Male symptoms of yeast infections are itching or burning on top of the penis, red rash on penis, white patches on the penis and men can have a white discharge also but is not common.. Yeast infection in men can spread to the skin of the thighs, buttocks, and scrotum. The treatment for infections in men is the same as women but instead they apply the cream to their penis and can use a yeast infection cream such as Monistat.
A yeast infection is possibly passed to a male though sexual contact from a partner who has one but doesn't necessarily mean that if a woman has it that the male will automatically get one. Once a male has a yeast infection, doctors may test men for other diseases such as diabetes. Over use of antibiotics increase the risks of yeast infections and having an impaired immune system such as being HIV positive increase the risks.
Women with diabetes are more likely to have candida infections because a womans vaginal secretions contain more sugar or glucose due to the high amounts of sugar in the blood. the excess glucose nourishes the yeast cells causing them to multiply. If the glucose levels in a woman are not well controlled then frequent yeast infections will occur. Another infection in the body could be the cause of the increase of yeast as well. Hyperglycemia is a condition where excessive sugar circulates in the blood plasma and interferes with the immune functions that prevent candida. Candida shows up in moist areas of the body such as feet, skin folds, the vaginal area, and the moist mouth...
If an infection doesn't clear with the cream alone then the option is available to use prescription drugs taken orally. Diflucan is a pill used to cure yeast infections and can kill other species of Candida. Extreme cases of infection with yeast clears after six consecutive months of oral yeast medicine. To diagnose a yeast infection a sterile swab goes into the vaginal area and viewed by microscopic examination.
