What is pre-diabetes? It is a warning: a wake-up call. It means you are on the road to developing full-blown Type 2 diabetes unless you make changes in your lifestyle. How sure is this prediction? Enough that it cannot be ignored... the sign or prediction is so big, it's hard to ignore.
Pre-diabetes means you are showing some classic symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, but you have not been diagnosed with the full-blown disease yet. If you look at it in simplistic terms it means your blood sugar level is higher than normal, but still not high enough for you to be classified as having Type 2 diabetes.
Having pre-diabetic symptoms is next to the last step. The next step is full-blown Type 2 diabetes. But you can stop the progression as long as you are willing to make the necessary changes in your life.
The dangerous thing about diabetes is how easily it can creep into your life without you even being aware. Most serious medical conditions give you some obvious warning signs to let you know something is not right in your body. But pre-diabetes isn't like that. The symptoms are usually so subtle and ramp up in severity over such a long period of time, actually 10 to 15 years, they go virtually unnoticed by the individual until it is too late. By the time many realize what is transpiring, they have already made it all the way to Type 2 diabetes.
It would be easy to say the symptoms of pre-diabetes are the same as those of Type 2 diabetes, with the exception they are generally less or lower in intensity. The most common symptoms of pre-diabetes include:
- frequent urination,
- excessive thirst,
- blurry vision,
- either frequent infections or cuts which take considerably longer to heal, fatigue, and even
- tingling or numbness in the legs and especially the feet.
But the dangerous point here is some individuals can have pre-diabetes and not exhibit any symptoms at all.
The most important thing to remember is anyone who feels they are a candidate for diabetes should talk to their doctor immediately to rule out the chances of developing the condition. Your doctor can perform several different tests which will be conclusive in determining whether or not you are pre-diabetic or how likely you are to join that group.
The process really begins when the body's cells can no longer use insulin effectively. This might occur because of one or more of the following:
- a tendency towards diabetes passed down from your parents or grandparents
- excess weight
- being physically inactive
- feeling high levels of stress for a long time
- taking medications such as steroids
- overexposure to toxins
- having had diabetes during pregnancy.
Early detection is the key. Ignoring the signs, no matter how obvious or subtle, will not make them go away. If you wait too long then it will be too late: you will have developed Type 2 diabetes.
Pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes are not conditions you must just live with. By making easy changes to your daily routine, its possible to protect your heart, kidneys, eyes and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes, and eliminate some of the complications you may already experience.
